About me
Who are you?
My name is Joyce Lau, the founder of JoySpeech. I am a student speech pathologist at the University of Sydney. I have been working as a speech therapy assistant and a private tutor for 3 years. I have recently started my placement in the Communication Disorder Treatment and Research Clinic (CDTRC) which is extremely exciting and rewarding. My centre of interest is paediatrics due to the massive obsession with kids development. Adult speech pathology fascinates me immensely as well, it is always so complex that there is just plenty to learn about!
I am multilingual, speaking Cantonese, Mandarin, English and French.

Why become a Speech Pathologist?
Every client is so unique in their own way that I, as a challenge seeker is always kept amused by speech pathology. A speech pathologist’s role to provide the most appropriate help for each child is excites me. Every new case is like a puzzle, yet to be solved.

On top of that, I am a firm believer that everyone has their say in the world. Everyone can be happy despite their appearance, physical ability, or past encounters.

But what is more rewarding is when what you do brings a drastic impact on someone’s life. The combination of helping people and being with kids truly brings me joy. And this indeed a strong factor.

I am raised under a mix of authoritarian and authoritative family style. My childhood is rather bittersweet. My parents are both fantastic and threatening. The beating was no stranger to me. I was once beaten with a stick until there are bruises all over the back as I cry, burying myself on the floor. I attended countless tutorials, extracurricular classes almost every day, I was tired and annoyed. As upsetting as this sounds, my parents dedicate lots of effort, time, and love to me. This can be seen by their invisible acts of care: making Chinese medical soups every day, preparing a comfy bed during the harsh winter, and more.
Do my parents love me? Yes, for sure and so do I. 100%. Yet, they want the most out of me that they had me work tirelessly.
Describe Yourself!
I am optimistic, adventurous, and strong-willed. Speaking of interests, this is hard as anything from watching a documentary to eating is my jam. The list is countless: baking, learning, listening to music, traveling…I have traveled to over 10 countries! So count me in for a chat about just anything! I am all ears! Here is an amazing shot I took in Phuket, Thailand.

Interests?
Nature is my getaway, it is therapeutic and relaxing. I do yoga occasionally as it brings a piece of calm to my overwhelming life. I enjoy meeting new people, engaging in deep conversation, and learn about their stories. Admittedly, I am quite a nerd. I prefer reading physical over digital books, I enjoy learning, in fact, I have been learning French for a year now! I enjoy watching a documentary than drama, buying books over clothes.
